Last race at Ontario ended in first title for Earnhardt

It was American author Kurt Vonnegut who said, "History is merely a list of surprises. It can only prepare us to be surprised yet again." Of course, he wasn't referring directly to the 1980 Los Angeles Times 500 at Ontario Motor Speedway, but it's a fitting comment on an event that featured a number of surprises, firsts and lasts.

Ontario -- a carbon-copy showplace of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway built in the center of the Inland Valley -- had the biggest purse on the circuit when NASCAR debuted there in 1971. But by the time NASCAR returned for the season finale in 1980, the sustained economic recession, coupled with poor management decisions, left the track clinging to survival.

Only 15,000 fans turned out for what would be the last oval race in California until 1997, but what they saw was a fascinating race for the victory and the season championship.

How Quick Allegiances Change

I know up front this one isn't that great. The idea came to me and then fizzled but I told someone I was doing a Logano one so I figured I needed to try it as best as possible.

Silly Season

Anyone know who will be driving the #5 next year? Also does anyone have any rumours on Ryan Newman's Sponsor for next year?

Stewart-Haas Racing new crew chief

Hendrick Motorsports engineering manager Darian Grubb has accepted a position as crew chief for driver Tony Stewart and his No. 14 Chevrolet next season,

Grubb, who works with the Nos. 5 and 88 teams at Hendrick, is expected to remain with that organization for the remainder of this season, sources said Tuesday.

Stewart is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing at the end of the season to take 50 percent ownership in Stewart-Haas Racing, which will field Chevrolets for Stewart and teammate Ryan Newman.

Grubb was not immediately available for comment. A spokesman with Hendrick said the organization does not discuss the contract status of employees. Stewart-Haas Racing officials declined to comment.

Grubb was lead engineer for driver Jimmie Johnson's team in 2006 when he took over the crew chief position on an interim basis when Johnson's regular crew chief, Chad Knaus, was suspended. During his brief tenure, Rubb led the team to two wins, including the Daytona 500 victory.

Last season, Grubb served as crew chief for Hendrick driver Casey Mears and the two earned a victory at the Coca-Cola 600. Grubb moved back into the engineering manager position at the beginning of this season.

End of race Saturday

This may have been brought up already, but I have to ask. Is anything going to happen to Kyle Busch (such as penalties?) for his behavior after the race in Bristol?

greg biffle's nazareth crash

does anybody remember when greg was in that wreck in the nazareth busch race with jeff purvis? I think that was quite possibly the worst wreck of his career. If he hadn't been able to turn that car a little bit sideways like he did, the outcome could have been much worse than it was for both of them. I don't why I started thinking about this today, I just did. Wondered if anybody else remembers it.
