Our Season Preview warned you to expect the unexpected in 2007.

Was that ever an understatement.

About the only thing during Speedweeks that wasn’t a surprise was Kevin Harvick winning the Busch Series opener, the Orbitz 300. Harvick winning a Busch race, so what else is new, right?

Nobody expected David Gilliland and Ricky Rudd to sit on the front row for the Great American Race.

Nobody expected Tony Stewart to lose the Daytona 500, not after his wins in the Budweiser Shootout and the Gatorade Duel 1.
Nobody expected Mark Martin in a Ginn Racing Chevrolet to be upfront at the end.

Nobody expected Harvick to charge from behind and beat Martin by a fraction of a second.

Nobody expected Michael Waltrip’s team to be caught cheating in their Toyota debut. Nobody expected as many race teams to be caught red handed. And nobody expected NASCAR’S severe penalties.

In this issue we bring you all the highlights of Speedweeks in 15 pages of great color photos and race reports. Included, too, is writer Thomas Pope’s “The Bakersfield Kid” to help you remember the path upward of Harvick, a new sensation yet again.

It so happened that we had planned stories on the crew chiefs several months earlier. In light of Daytona’s cheating scandal, they are particularly relevant.
