About Save The Speedway
STS Motorsports, Inc. was founded in 2005 by Rob Mardsen, and was started as a grass roots movement to reopen the closed North Wilkesboro Speedway which was closed nine years prior. Armed with
only a petition and a simple website, Mardsen soon began having other volunteers who shared the vision of a new life at North Wilkesboro Speedway.
As things stood, both owners Bruton Smith and Bob Bahre had no intentions of any kind dealing with the track they both owed half of. Eventually as efforts progresses, Bruton finally agreed to
sell the track...for $12 million dollars. A very high price tag, but at least there was an offer finally named for the speedway which hadn't existed.
We also are in the beginning stages of building a monument dedicated to the track and its drivers and to it's operators. We have talked to several local officials and are trying to work out the
fine details. Ideally, we could start some sort of local gathering as the good folks at Augusta International Raceway do every September. Such a gathering could possibly bring out old friends,
drivers, cars and other good memories of racing in Wilkes County.
While our current direction has changed, our original ideas have not. We still are avidly looking for a buyer or buyers of the track who would reopen it for racing which the people of Wilkes
County still miss. Proof of this is when there is just a single car doing some random testing at the track, hundreds show up to watch. One day we hope we can produce all of our goals, including
reopening of the track. Until that fine day comes along we will do our best to preserve the glory of that region.
