THINGS I WISH EVERYONE KNEW.
Ovarian Cancer October 2000, my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was 35. On October 1, 2004 my mom died from complications with ovarian cancer treatment. She was 39. A woman has a 1 in 67 chance of developing ovarian cancer. It is the 5th most common cancer in women and causes more death than any other female reproductive cancer. 2/3 of women develop ovarian cancer at age 55 and above. Only 25% develop it between the ages of 35 and 54. About 76% of women with ovarian cancer die within the first year of diagnosis. About 45 % live longer than 5 years after diagnosis.
It Whispers, So Listen.
AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is the most advanced stages of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is a virus that kills or damages cells of the body's immune system.
HIV most often spreads through unprotected sex with an infected person. AIDS may also spread by sharing drug needles or through contact with the blood of an infected person. Women can give it to their babies during pregnancy or childbirth. On May 28, 2007 I had the opportunity to go to South Africa for two weeks to learn about their healthcare system and how they are dealing with the AIDS epidemic. Approximately 20% of the South African adult population is HIV positive. At the orphanage I was helping out with, 60% of the children were HIV positive. They have no chance of adoption and the orphanages are getting full because treatment is more available and is free. South Africa has free healthcare to everyone as well as private. The children are the ones who are suffering.
UBUNTU: I am what you are everyone can make a difference because what we do in our lives affects everyone else. Breast Cancer I am a radiologic technologist and believe it or not, I love to do mammograms. I have never had one but it is one of the easiest ways to detect the number one cancer in women except for skin cancer. There seems to be this thought that only women get breast cancer when over 1,000 men are diagnosed with it each year. About 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. Over 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, one person is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes, one person dies of breast cancer every 14 minutes. DO got get your yearly mammo and please DO your monthly self checks.
