Newman's search narrowed down: #12-Ryan Newman said Friday at Indy that he has his search for a new ride narrowed down (to one), just doesn't have everything finalized, it is more a matter of paperwork and finalizing everything before he can announced something. Not a Rumor: Newman to leave Penske at end of 2008 season
nascar.com By Team Release July 14, 2008 02:09 PM EDT
MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Penske Racing and Ryan Newman have mutually agreed to move in new directions at the conclusion of the 2008 season.
"We want to thank Ryan for his hard work and contributions to Penske Racing over the past nine years," team owner Roger Penske said. "We wish Ryan all the best for the future and we'll continue to focus our efforts on making the Chase with Ryan and the Alltel Dodge team this season."
Newman, driver of the No. 12 Dodge, is currently in his ninth season competing for Penske Racing. He is ranked 16th in the Cup Series standings through 19 races.
Newman has 13 wins in 243 starts with 63 top-five finishes and 105 top-10s. Since his debut on Nov. 5, 2000, at Phoenix he also has 43 poles -- tops in the Cup Series -- despite not running his first full season until 2002.
"I appreciate Penske Racing and all they have done for me, but more importantly, I appreciate their friendship and what they have done for my career," Newman said. "I would also like to thank all of the sponsors, especially Alltel, who have supported me."
Newman finished in the top 10 in points from 2002-05, but has finished 18th and 13th the past two seasons.
The driver of the Penske Racing No. 12 car for the 2009 season will be announced in the near future.
"From the early days in the ARCA series to our team celebration in Victory Lane at this year's Daytona 500, Alltel Wireless has enjoyed a memorable, eight-year relationship with Ryan Newman," said Jeff Fox, chief operating officer, Alltel Wireless.
"Ryan has been an outstanding representative on and off the track, and we're very proud of the results the partnership has delivered to our brand. We remain committed to our sponsorship of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge and look forward to having Ryan behind the wheel for the rest of the 2008 season. We wish him all the best in his next endeavor."
That endeavor may be as a teammate of fellow Indiana native Tony Stewart, who official announced last week that he is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing at season's end to drive for Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009. It has been widely speculated that Newman also would drive for SHR next year.

Food for thought
Matt Borland use to be Ryan Newman's crew chief from 2002 to 2006 and helped him win his rookie of the year award in 2002. Borland is currently the director of competition at HAAS CNC Racing ( now Stewart HAAS Racing ). This is going to be a big factor for Newman in his determination to leave (or not) Penske and follow Tony Stewart.

Office Depot to Stewart UPDATE 3 Stewart granted release from Gibbs: been told that Office Depot will be the sponsor for Tony Stewart in 2009 when he drives for Haas CNC Racing which is will buy in to. Hearing the announcement of the buy and deal will be made in Indianapolis the week NASCAR is in Indy for the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, July 27th.
UPDATE: Tony Stewart is expected to announce a 2009 move to Haas-CNC Racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in three weeks. Reliable sources tell Sirius Speedway that Stewart will also announce sponsorship from Office Depot and Old Spice as part of a new, multi-year package with Haas CNC, and that Penske Racing’s Ryan Newman will join him as a teammate, with sponsorship from Jack Daniels. That surprise move comes as the result of an enviable situation at Richard Childress Racing, which now has five potential sponsors for next season, and only four teams. Sirius Speedway has learned that UPS will move from Michael Waltrip Racing’s #44 Toyota to the quarterpanels of Clint Bowyer’s #07 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet in 2009, leaving Jack Daniels in search of a new driver. That driver will be Newman, who is set to sign-on with Stewart at Haas CNC.
UPDATE: Stewart was scheduled to tell his team on Wednesday that this will be his last season, then announce on Thursday in Chicago that he has bought into Haas CNC Racing and will drive for that team with another driver -- Ryan Newman, according to sources, is all but a done deal -- next year. Stewart will unveil his new car with Office Depot as the primary sponsor at a news conference in Indianapolis in two weeks, sources said. Logano, 18, said he will focus the rest of this season on his Nationwide Series ride and hope to get into a few Cup races before the end of the year to prepare him for next season. ESPN.com 7-9-2008

Truex sets NASCAR carousel of driver moves in motion again
The latest game of musical chairs among Cup drivers is in full swing, as each move sets another move in motion. Let's take a peek at the latest head-spinning moves:
Martin Truex Jr. will probably replace Ryan Newman at Penske Racing next season, filling in another piece of the jigsaw puzzle in an active year of driver movement in Sprint Cup.
Newman, for his part, is likely headed for the revamped Haas CNC Racing operation being put together by Tony Stewart, who will be its new co-owner in addition to a driver.
