Memorial Day came into being in the United States soon after the Civil War, when General John Logan, Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, declared May 30 a special day to honor the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The selection of May 30th may be because it was "The Day of Ashes" in France - the day that Napoleon's remains were brought back from St. Helena.
Sheet music for a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet, includes text dedicating it "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead"; This indicates that women's groups were organized in the South to place flowers on the graves of the fallen (both Confederate AND Union it is thought), before the end of the Civil War. The tradition of handing out red poppies, was begun in 1915 by a woman named Moina Michael, after reading the poem "In Flanders Fields", written to commemorate those fallen in the First World War.
Recently, there has been a movement to rescue the Holiday from being a three-day weekend devoted to six packs and lawn chairs, and turn it back into a day for mourning soldiers who died serving their country. The "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution, passed by Congress in December of 2000, asks that all Americans formally observe a silent moment of "Remembrance and Respect" at 3 P.M. on Memorial Day. In 1999, Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii introduced bill S 189 to the Senate, which proposes to return the Holiday to May 30th, its original day of observance, instead of "the last Monday in May".
In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. by John Macrae (1872-191

Hueytown is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 15,364. Hueytown was the
home of the legendary NASCAR Alabama Gang. It also made international headlines with the unexplainable "Hueytown Hum," a mysterious noise once believed to be related to an underground coal mine in
the area. The Alabama Gang was the nickname for a group of NASCAR drivers who set up shop and operated out of Hueytown, Alabama, near Birmingham, Alabama.[1] In the late 1950s, young auto racer Bobby
Allison left Miami, Florida, looking for an area that had more opportunities to race. He discovered central Alabama in his travels. The region was dotted with small dirt tracks, and Allison won big
his first few times out. He returned to Florida to pick up his brother Donnie Allison, and friend Red Farmer. The trio set up shop in Hueytown, Alabama, and were dominant throughout the 1960s and
early 1970s. In 1973, Jimmy Means joined the gang. Beginning in 1979, their sons and contemporaries began racing, and became known as members of the Alabama Gang themselves. Bobby's son Davey
Allison, and fellow Hueytown residents Neil Bonnett, and David Bonnett. Hut Stricklin, who married Bobby's daughter, became the last member of the Alabama Gang. Other drivers (notably Dale Earnhardt)
were great friends with members of this group, and while not Alabama residents, these other drivers became aszociated with the Alabama Gang. All of the original members of the Alabama Gang have been
inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. Davey Allison's little brother, Clifford Allison followed the Alabama Gang tradition, but while practicing for a Busch Series race in
Michigan, he spun out in turn 4 and was killed. Davey Allison died in a helicopter crash at Talladega Superspeedway in 1993. Then Neil Bonnett died while practicing for the 1994 Daytona 500. Bobby
Allison retired in 1988 after suffering injuries in a race at Pocono Raceway that nearly cost him his life. Farmer, the oldest member of the "Gang," was injured in the helicopter crash that took
Davey Allison's life, but recovered and continues to race at short tracks today, well into his 70s. Hueytown memorialized the racers by renaming its main street Allison-Bonnett Memorial Drive.

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me When tomorrow starts without me and I'm not here to see... If the sun should rise and find your eyes filled with tears for me, I wish so much you wouldn't cry the way you did today... While thinking of the many things we didn't get to say. I know how much you love me, as much as I love you... And each time you think of me, I know you'll miss me, too. But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand... That Jesus came and called my name and took me by the hand, And said my place was ready in heaven far above... And that I'd have to leave behind all those I dearly love. So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart... For every time you think of me, I'm right here in your heart.
